That is the whole idea. Small pieces, repeated, until spoken Danish stops sounding like one long word.
Real Danish, not app Danish
Practise with studio recordings or with real video clips. The player replays exactly the sentence you are on, and stops there.

The catch
There isn’t one.
Hugge is free to use. No card, no trial that quietly becomes a subscription, no lesson limit that appears in week two.
It’s free because it costs us very little to run, and because a Danish listening tool is not much use if the people who need it most are the ones who can’t pay for it.
Some things here genuinely aren’t free to provide — live teacher-led sessions, for one. If that ever changes for a part of the app, we’ll say so on this page before it does, not in an email afterwards.
Before you start
Questions you’re probably asking
- I already tried Duolingo and I still can't follow a conversation.
- That's the normal outcome, and it isn't your fault. Vocabulary apps teach you words in isolation, at a speed no Dane uses. Hugge only ever gives you whole sentences, spoken at full speed, and makes you write down what you actually heard. It's a harder exercise, and it's the one that moves your listening.
- I'm already taking a Danish course. Do I need this as well?
- Your course probably meets twice a week. Your ear needs the other five evenings. Hugge is built to sit alongside a course, not replace it — and if your teacher uses Hugge, you will practise the same material they are teaching.
- Is my Danish good enough to start?
- If you know a few hundred words, yes. Start with the children's stories — they're slow, short and repetitive on purpose. You are meant to get sentences wrong at first. That's the exercise working.
- What Hugge doesn't do.
- There's no grammar course here, no speaking practice, and no way to chat with a Dane. It does one thing: it trains your ear on real spoken Danish. If you need grammar explained or conversation practice, you'll need something else as well — and that's fine.

- Do I need an account to try it?
- No. The sentence at the top of this page is the real exercise. An account only saves your progress.
- What levels does it cover?
- A1 to B1. Every topic is tagged, so you can see before you start.
- Does it help with Prøve i Dansk?
- Indirectly. PD2 and PD3 both test listening, and that is what Hugge trains. It is not an exam preparation course and it does not teach the exam format.
- Can I use it on my phone?
- Yes. Typing Danish on a phone keyboard is slower, but the exercise works the same.
- Where does the audio come from?
- Native Danish speakers, plus real video clips for the video topics. No synthetic voices reading word by word.
- Is my Danish level shown to other people?
- Your cohort shows first names and XP for the week. Nothing else is shared.
